Types of Pearls

Freshwater Pearls – Usually from China.

Akoya Pearls - Usually come from Japan and look similar to Freshwater pearls, but have a slightly higher luster and are more symmetrical.

South Sea Pearls - Usually come from the South Seas and Australia, larger than Freshwater or Akoya pearls and cost more as well.

Tahitian Pearls – Some of the most expensive pearls available, and larger in size.

Pearl Quality

Luster
Refers to pearl's light reflection. Larger pearls usually have more luster.

Surface
Pearls are imperfect as they are made by living organisms
Pearls can have bubbles, dents, or spots.
The fewer blemishes the more valuable the pearl.

Shape
Pearls come in a variety of shapes: round, off round, teardrop shaped, or irregular.
Round pearls are the most valuable.

Size
As a rule of thumb, the larger the pearl, the more it will cost.

Color
Pearls can come in an assortment colors, from pink to gold to black.
